NZ Election 2020 – Overseas Voting is Open Now

You can vote from overseas from Wednesday 30 September until 7pm, Saturday 17 October (NZ time).

This election will see New Zealanders given the opportunity to vote on some of the biggest issues facing a generation, but there’s concern eligible overseas Kiwis may be missing from the polls - again.

About one million New Zealanders live overseas, and while there aren’t precise records, best estimates put the number of those eligible to vote between 600,000 and 750,000 (based on eligibility rates within the country). In the last election, just 10 percent of those eligible voters cast their ballot.

There is an active campaign, lead by returned Kiwi Tracey Lee, to encourage overseas voter participation in this election. If you are a NZ citizen who has visited NZ in the last three years, you are eligible to enrol and vote.

Remember, you can vote from overseas from Wednesday 30 September until 7pm, Saturday 17 October (NZ time).

Services for voting from overseas in person will vary depending on local COVID-19 safety guidelines and requirements. Please contact your overseas voting place for their visitor requirements.

If you're voting from overseas, you must be enrolled by midnight on Friday 16 October (NZ time). We recommend enrolling earlier if possible to allow time for your enrolment application to be processed. You won't be able to use the download/upload service until your enrolment is confirmed.

You can vote from overseas if you’re enrolled and one of the following statements is true:

  • You’re a New Zealand citizen who’s visited New Zealand in the last 3 years
  • You’re a permanent resident of New Zealand who’s visited New Zealand in the last 12 months.
Are you a permanent resident?

For electoral purposes, you’re a permanent resident if you’re in New Zealand legally and not required to leave within a specific time.  If you’re Australian, Niuean, Tokelauan, or a Cook Islander, you can vote if you’re enrolled and you’ve lived in New Zealand continuously for 12 months or more.

Are you a public servant or member of the New Zealand Defence Force?

You’re eligible to enrol and vote no matter how long you’ve been outside New Zealand if you’re in one of the following groups:

  • Public servants working overseas and their families
  • New Zealand diplomats or trade representatives and their families
  • Members of the New Zealand Defence Force and their families.
